Whaddya know why .TV still not dominating the cyberspace?

Why .TV still not dominating the cyberspace? Do you know the answer to this question? Well if not, here's my humble opinion why.

The .TV domain extension probably the best alternative if the .com .net .org .info or .biz are no longer available for your business. The .TV is the country code assigned to Tuvalu, the registry is currently managed by Verisign with Enom partnership to sell. This is the most common abbreviation in every language, from youngster to adult.

Why other businesses is not using .TV? For one is the price tag per year to maintain a generic domain name or referred as premium domain name. Let's use Texas.TV and Florida.TV, as of writing this article they are still available to register at a premium tag price, $50K and $25K per year respectively. If you're starting a small business, you will likely get a .com for a less than $10 per year maintenance (check price at NeedName.com) instead of .TV domain name. They (registry) continue to increase the price of premium domain name. I remember checking Florida.TV for only $7K in early May of 2007 and before that I was able to registered .TV between $35-$50 per year in 2005 under Verisign management. I still own Posses.TV domain name as of this year.

I've seen many .TV domain names that reprice to $3K, 5K or even $10K per year if not renew by the current owner. What's the business logic behind the reprice of domain name registration for .TV? You beat me, just like you I'm confused and can't justify the needs to reprice an expired domain name. From my own experience, I did not renew VD.TV and Belgium.TV last year so you will expect that these domains are re-registered by now. Wrong, they are still available for you to register if you have $10K to burn per year. I've seen 2 letter .TV also reprice from $1K to $5k or $10K per year. It must be working for Verisign (or Enom) with this approach but I saw many investors backing down in .TV, some reducing their portfolio and re-invest their money to other domain extension where the renewal is under $10 only.

Don't get me wrong, I like .TV extension because of it's global market appeal. But if Verisign (or Enom) will not change their "premium" pricing soon. This business will collapse before you know it.

Here are the successful media businesses that are using .TV domain name.
TNT.TV, ComcastSportsNet.TV, MTV.TV, Justin.TV and more websites added here.

  3. What about all the Geo .Tv's with renewals that would allow you to renew the domain for 1000 years and still pay less than the cost of buying the .com version??

Your article makes it sound like all .Tv's have massive renewals when reality is that 1000's of top .tv's have renewals of less than $500 (many at $25 - $30)

You asl appear to state businesses are not adopting .Tv domains, is that your view?
As if it is then it's wrong, simple as that.
Do the research, look at the top brands using .tv and i'm sure you will agree with me.

  4. I'm not new in .TV domain business and I have some GEO TV's investment in progress. I have one running at Michigan.TV still in development.

Here's a link for other websites that are using .TV, not complete but you have something to use as a baseline.

Great idea of checking all the GEO domains. I will start for US GEO state .TV to see if they are being use as a media centric website.

    Cheers,

  5. I know your not new to .tv, that's why i'm a little puzzled why you use examples which make it look as though Geo .Tv's all have crazy, high renewals when the reality is that the examples shown are really the exception rather than the rule & that is why they are sitting unregistered. IMHO

Thanks for the link to the list of developed sites but i read it a long while ago when Michael wrote it, it was a great list for them but SO much has happened in regards to major brands uisng .tv since then & i wonder if you have researched this before stating how Business is not using .tv?

Looking at the US Geo market for examples of great developed .tv's is not going to give you a great picture as i KNOW you know the US Geo's are typically not developed right now as they are owned by a small group of people who either are holding out for big money or have made comments about developing but not launched a site.
It's well known with .TV owners how the US Geo market hasn't went anywhere since a small number of large investors grabbed all the decent domains that didn't have high renewals.

I know you have any interest in .tv & have devoted lots of your time into acquiring .Tv's but in my eyes this article has been set out to show only the negatives. Using facts about premiums that only show high premium renewals, stating how businesses are not using .tv's when your source is an out of date article which actually does show some excellent .Tv sites owned by top companies BUT since it's an old article & only about TV companies then it cannot show a real picture on how .Tv's are being used. IMHO

If you do want a list of some real top brands who have launched high profile .Tv's lately Months then feel free to ask, i would also be happy to show you how many top Geo .Tv's have renewal fee's that are a fraction of those stated & many of these Geo .Tv's have rejected offers of $xx,xxx already from Endusers.

    Have a Good day.

  7. I'm just a concerned .Tv owner, worried that too many Internet bloggers paint and exaggerated picture of how many decent .Tv's actually have really high renewals as that is what 90% of the blogs who talk about .tv seem to focus on.

They ignore the fact that 1000's of us got the chance to buy quality domains that we would NEVER have got without a premium system.

The premium setup may not be perfect but by only using examples of domains that are sitting unregistered due to their USUASALLY high renewals does not give a clear picture.

Regards the Top brands using .tv's, just off the top of my head (i'll try avoid any featured in Michael's article):

    Adidas.tv
    Mercedes-benz.tv
Boris-Becker.tv (OK not a brand but very famous and a stunning site)
    EdFest.tv (World famous festival)
www.attwilliams.tv (Formula 1 team, i THINK F1 is most watched sport in the world so massive exposure)
    Renault.tv
    BMW-Web.tv (BMW's web TV channel)
    Audi.tv
    LittleBritain.tv (very famous TV show)
    Supernatural.tv
    VBS.tv
    Ethical.tv
    Green.tv
    FTV.tv
    G-star.tv
    Vendr.tv
    SingleMalt.tv
    Pokerstars.tv
    Partypoker.tv
    Williamhill.tv
    LiveScore.tv
    HiltonHead.tv
    Rawvegas.tv
    PIC.tv
    ABCNewsOne.tv
    ZillionTV.tv
    Stuff.tv................etc

I could go on but i'm sure i've made my point.

I don't put forward this arguement just to disagree with you remember & i actually enjoy reading your blog as it's one of the few places that actually knows what really happens inside the .tv extension.
I just think you need to be more careful how any negative comments come across.

    Best Wishes.
